my mom told me when i was young, "you do not call yourself a Christian. others decide that based on your actions." and that is legit. totally legit. im not ranting about being holier than thou, ill be the first to admit my flaws. with that said, i at best try. i try my hardest to glorify God in all i do. it bothers me, so much, to hear people call themselves Christians and then do things that they know are wrong. Christianity, with 76.5% of the population, is the largest religion in America today; it has become "the norm" for society. people have lost their love for God, if they ever knew Him in the first place, and have found a lust for society's norm. Christianity is about having a full on passionate relationship with The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit.
also, i think today's society of religious followers focus on the things that shouldnt be done if one is a Christian. first of all whats wrong with that is the fact that, as what you shouldnt participate in as a Christian is very important, an equally important part is what you should take action with and actually be doing. in some sense, Christianity has become complacent. also, secondly wrong with that: "religious followers." so many people follow religion and they hide behind the idea of, i went to church today [and gave up that one hour of my life] so im a Christian...way to go me. we have become domesticated, which was never God's will for us. and when domestication sets in, that is when satan stops attacking us. at first, this may sound like a good thing. however, it is the complete opposite. how are we supposed to grow in Christ if we're never have to stand up against satan? how are we supposed to rely on God if we never have any problems? when our faith in God is weak and we havent continued to develop our relationship with Him, we're no longer a threat to satan.
with that said, i also believe that some Christians come into Christianity as a way to be saved on their term. a way to be saved from earthly tortures such as diseas, financial delimas, hurt in general. that is not not not what Christianity is about. it is about going through whatever God puts you through and through that, staying rooted in God, to glorify Him. we are saved in Him, not ourselves. a common misconception is that when Jesus died, He freed us from our pain and our suffering. but in fact, He freed us from the fear of death. He died so that we could live. to become a Christian, and whole heartedly believe that, is to understand that we are dead, and now have the opportunity to live forever in Him.
with all of that said, i do believe in the genuine goodness of people and i know a number of people whom i respect and look up to and absolutely would call Christians.
however, with that statement i just wrote without thinking fully about it, i also think that another common misconception is that good people and Christians are the same. they're not. but that's an entirely different blog to type about tomorrow maybe :)
The point, of course, is not that God makes us mentally or emotionally imbalanced, but that He makes us passionately and spiritually unbalanced. God steers us in the direction of His kingdom, His purpose, His passions. His desire is not to conform us, but to transform us. [Romans 12:2] Not to make us compliant, but to make us creative. His intent is never to domesticate us, but to liberate us.-McManus, The Barbarian Way
Romans 12:2
Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.
